Setting aside/Absetzen

Setting aside exists in an upper and a lower version. In each case it's nothing more than adopting the guard Ochs, or Pflug respectively.

The upper version is good against Oberhaue, the lower one against thrusts to the lower openings. Setting aside does not work against thrusts to the upper openings and against Unterhaue. In both cases the own and the opponent's blade are almost parallel to each other, thus enabling the opponent to change through (durchwechseln) - in case he hasn't hit already.

For reasons of clarity the techniques are shown from both sides.

Setting aside/Absetzen (above)

Green starts with a right Oberhau.

Dark winds (moves) his sword into the guard Ochs. By this he is protected against a hit.

His point already threatens Green's face. He just has to stretch the arms a little or take a small step in order to hit.

Setting aside/Absetzen (below)

Green is in Pflug and is about to thrust to Dark's lower left opening.

The thrust is on its way.

Dark winds into left Pflug. Again, he just has to stretch his arms in order to hit Green.
