Pogen twice,
do your work with that.
From both sides,
learn stepping twice.

Here the Master talks about another main piece and its properties, which is the Pogen. It is to be remembered and known that many pieces and taking the Messer come from the Pogen and many pieces follow the Pogen.
Do the Pogen like this. Stand with the Messer on your left side above the knee with the point directed at the man. When he enters the bind from his right side to your left side, turn your Messer in front of your body to your left side, letting the point drop a bit, with the thumb facing down and the back edge towards you.   When his Messer hits yours [original text: "his"], Indes step to his left side out of his strike with a double step and strike through his head on his left side.
Execute the other Pogen. Hold your Messer like before and on your right side. When he strikes at the opening on your left side, turn your Messer to your right side and upwards under his Messer, letting the point stand out on your right side and the hilt on your left side, the true edge towards you and the thumb facing down. Step out of his strike and around to his [original text: "your"] right side with a double step and strike at his head on his right side.

Now do the third Pogen. Stand with your Messer at your left side, letting the thumb rest on the Messer and the point facing to the ground and the back edge towards the man. When he strikes at you, turn your Messer to your right side beneath his Messer and lift your shield, that is the displacement, well in front of your head. Go with your left foot in front of his right and well out of his strike to his right side. Indes strike at his head on his right side.

The fourth Pogen is to be done on the left side. Stand with the Messer on your left side, letting the point face towards the earth and the thumb rest on top of the flat. Show yourself open on your right side. When he strikes at this opening, turn your Messer well to your right side, letting the hilt stand on your right side and the point on your left. Go well around him to his left side with a double step and both feet and strike through his head on his left side. Thereby you have the Pogen twice on both sides.

What comes long from the Pogen,
the point takes off swiftly.
Learn to wave the back edge,
drop it long to the head.

Here the Master explains a counter to the straight strikes that are hewn from the Pogen. Do the counter like this. When you strike at him and he turns his Messer beneath and displaces, then strikes down with a straight Oberhau, Indes always step aside out of the Oberhau and strike at his head or wind your Messer Indes against his and thrust at his face. Or turn your Messer with the back edge onto his Messer when he strikes at you and twist your hand and Messer Indes with the true edge towards him and strike through his head.
