If he lies in the hanging point,
take the Messer without fear.
With the cross you shall push,
with both edges you shall practice.

Here the Master teaches how you shall stand in the hanging point and what to do from both guards. Assume the position of the hanging point on both sides as pictured below.

Here the Master speaks of another main piece, the Pnehmen. The Pnehmen in the Messer takes place when you come together in the Zufechten and you are both in the hanging point as pictured below. If he stands in the hanging point on your right side and you stand in the hanging point on his right side as well, so if you are in the bind and face each other, let your cross go to his left side against his Messer and push his Messer to his right side with your Messer. Indes go with your right foot decidedly around to his left side and strike at his head with the blunt edge.

If you lie on his left side with the hanging point against his Messer, let your hilt or cross go to his right side against the blade of his Messer and push his Messer to his left side. Indes go to his right side with your left foot in front and strike at his head with the true edge.

When he lies in the hanging point
and considers Pnehmen,
you shall go through,
if you won't take damage from him.

Here the Master explains a counter against the Pnehmen [Rep.v.] If he lies in the hanging point on your right side and you lie in the hanging point on his right side as well, if he then pushes your Messer to your right side and aims to strike at your ear on your left side, Indes jerk your Messer close to your body with a lowered point and be in advance of his strike. Strike at his ear on his right side.

If you lie in the hanging point on your left side and he lies against you in the hanging point on his left side as well and aims to do Pnehmen on your Messer with his Messer, take care, when he pushes your Messer then jerk your Messer close to your body and come in advance of his strike. Strike at his left ear. Indes wind your Messer against him and thrust at his face if you want. This counter is very bad and not the best, but if you can't get any further, you can resort to it.
