Do Durchwechseln with the piece,
drive the masters back.
Respect the art and learn,
thrust from both sides with strength.

Here the Master speaks about the Durchwechseln. [Rep.v.] You shall know that the Durchwechseln is versatile and manifold. You can execute it from all strikes against those fencers who strike at the Messer and not at the openings of the man. You shall do the Durchwechseln with great care, so that you are not endangered by the Ansetzen when you do the Durchwechseln.

This is how you do the Durchwechseln. When you come to the man in the Zufechten, strike long and from above at his head. If he then strikes at your Messer and not at your body, let the point change through beneath during the strike before he binds against your Messer. Thrust at his other opening. When he observes the thrust and follows the thrust with his Messer to displace, do the Durchwechseln to the other side. Do this every time he strikes at your Messer to displace. Use it on both sides. top

Another Durchwechseln. When you come to him in the Zufechten, set your left foot in front and hold your long point at his face. If he then strikes at your Messer from below or above to push it away or bind against it, Indes let the point drop through beneath and thrust at his other side. You can do this against all strikes. top

64v

Notice the third piece and a good lesson. When he displaces or binds at your Messer in another way and he does not aim his point at your face or an opening of your body, do the Durchwechseln blissfully. But if he keeps his point in front of your face or an opening, do not do the Durchwechseln, but remain in the bind and work from there towards the nearest opening. Then he can't do Nachreißen or Ansetzen. top
